| Ok, you seriously can't say you didn't see this one coming...
Which would you like in YOUR anime?! Subtitles with Japanese (or other original language), or Voiceovers in your native language?
Personally, I prefer subtitles. One deciding factor was a certain anime my sister used to watch *cough* American Sailor Moon *cough*. But another reason is... oh crap. I'm a japanophile. Sue me.
Actually, it is kinda interesting hearing an anime in it's original, intended form with the ability to actually understand what those crazy people are saying.
Then again, I have a friend who has to watch dubs because he reads too slow, which I understand. Subs allow only a certain amount of time for one to read each line, and while I feel as if the lines are usually broken down small enough for people to read, people have their own reading speeds.
Well, I said what I had to say.

| I usually like much of my anime (and video games, if they have the option) in the original Japanese with subtitles.
However, I do like dubs too sometimes. I mean, ADV Films usually do pretty good dubs (although they somewhat deviate from the original script, but its understandable since one should make it sensicle in English, plus relevant to the "mainstream" American viewers). Plus, I don't know why, but Anime comedies just seem better in English anyway.

| I prefer subtitles because some stories have completed events & conversations that cannot be understood easily. Also, Japanese voice-actors/actresses are so awesome, they act like they are "living" the story, unlike dubs, even if they perform will, you can still somehow feel they are "acting" I'm not saying all dubs are bad, but most of them are | |

You may be right in some respects, but I prefer Excel Saga in Japanese. ...and Original Dirty Pair. ...and Ranma 1/2. ...and that's about it. (Samurai Champloo is pretty funny in English.)

| I'm for subtitles too... Is much better to hear the original language, plus, very often, when they make the dub, some words or phrases are changed in order to make the actor be able to say something during the time the character on the screen is moving his/her lips... so, very often the idea, or the sens changes... what I don't like about subtitles... while you read, you can't watch the screen, so you may miss some details... | |

...and that's about it. (Samurai Champloo is pretty funny in English.) ...and Cromartie High School. ...and Golden Boy. And, YES, EXCEL SAGA. They did a great job with the dub. I was surprised. But, yeah, I love subs. I'll take them over almost anything dubbed. I mean, yes, there are exceptions like: - Cowboy Bebop: I thought it was cast and dubbed really, really well. The voices matched the characters. - Tenchi Muyo!: I've never seen it subbed, plus, I think it's another well cast dub. - Outlaw Star: I saw it in both English and Japanese and enjoyed it in English more. Yeah...then, there are dubs like the one for Neon Genesis Evangelion, where I've seen most of the series in English (I used to rent and copy VHS tapes from Blockbuster), and after I saw the movie in Japanese...it was like I was watching a completely different show. Then there's 4kids' dubs. I don't want to go there. It's a scary place.

| Some dubs do fly due to being decent (VERY few dubs stand out to be impressive), but not a whole lot are good for the ears here.
I stick to subs due to the authentic feel of the original voices and what they say.

| I prefer to watch my animes with proper voice dubs (Ghost in Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Cowboy Bebop etc.) cause if the show has the right cast you can get pulled into story and stay with the show until it ends. Sometimes I don't mind subtitles I'll use them IF I have to---namely when my sister watched movies---I don't think she's def but she's hard of hearing the tv some times ,but when I'm alone then it's no subtitles for me cause I think the subtitles draws your attention away from the what's going on. I also found out that on some DVD's (Char's Counterattack for example) the English voice dub don't match the subtitles sometimes---its kinda funny sometimes when the characters are saying one thing and the subtitles are saying another . | |

| Dubs all the way for me. Subs just give me a headache and I quickly lose interest. Fortunately, I have the choice of watching English, Spanish, or French dubs.
I can't say the same for games--I don't care to understand a game's story at all as long as I can play. Recently I started replaying Langrisser II using the English translation patch, and honestly it doesn't add a thing to the experience even though it's a smooth translation.

If I'm reading a show then I can't watch the beautyful artwork and/or get drawn in to the story of the show. I watch anime to watch not to read.

| I'm a pretty quick reader, so I generally stick with subs, unless the Dub script has its own flair to it rather than just being a spoken version of the subtitles (Martian Successor Nadesico, for ex.). | |
