DEADLY TOWERS!!

I just had to start a thread for this. I am working on a speed run and I was wondering about your experiences with this evil evil game.

managed 1:08:21 today but then i watched a video where he does it in 0:45. The trick is, you don't need to buy all the low-level armors. Just buy the Gloves, Orange Scrolls and Red Drinks, and then try not to get hit until you get to the good armors.

I've never done a speed run for the game because I'm more interested in doing EVERYTHING in the game. That said, even after 15+ years of playing the game, I've still not gotten around to mapping each and every dungeon.

TIPS: Know your dungeons. If you know which dungeons to go through to get right to the towers and then back to the gates, you'll have a much easier (and faster) route. Also, as previously mentioned, don't bother with 3rd tier equipment. Just play through and get all the 1st Tier stuff as you go through the towers (the Boots can be found in one tower's secret world, the Parallel and Double Shots can be found in other secret/parallel worlds, and all but the final weapon can be found amongst the towers' various secret rooms). As for purchasing, assuming you get everything through secret and parallel worlds, you only need to purchase one green scroll and all the blue drinks you can hold. Optionally, you can get two or three morning stars to make the final battle easier and faster (though knowing the patterns of the first two forms of Rubas makes it much faster to just rapid-fire them to death), although if you're lucky, you can pin yourself in the corner against Rubas' final form and wail on him with the Parallel Shots until he dies too, as he'll be unable to move further towards you to finish you off, and it should take even less time than the morning star.

I'll attempt a speed run sometime soon. My weekend is looking pretty full right now, but I've played the game for so many years that I should be able to pull off a fairly decent speed run, given a bit of luck.

I've never really played this game (or, if I ever had, I probably had blocked it off in my memory), but it seems that this game seems to be on top of many a reviewers' (or at least, for AVGN and Seanbaby) "Worst Game of All Time" list.

Anyway, HeromanX, I wish you both good luck the mapping this game. Putting together the maps would probably be tedious, judging from the AVGN's review that he did on the game. ^^;

It's quite the daunting task, Ianna, so I appreciate your generous support. ^^ Each dungeon has tons of rooms, some of them close to 200 rooms and some of them even circle out (so finding the point that it circles is another task in and of itself).

And I duly note that many reviewers place it towards the top of "worst games ever made", even though the ending would almost merit that. Lol They also tend to put Friday the 13th up there too, but the reasons I've found that they do so is more an issue of adjusting to the system and memorizing maps. Sometimes, as with DT, they say the game is "too difficult" in the beginning. I dare to challenge that notion with Ghosts & Goblins, considered to be among the most difficult NES games ever made. Thus in my opinion, these games are quite good and should never have been on those lists in the first place.

I find GnG more reasonable than DT. In GnG you don't get lost in dungeons and the hit detection is a lot more fair. In GnG a weak enemy can't pin you in a corner and kill you.

You have no idea how wrong that statement is. @_@ While they may only be able to deal a first blow, they can certainly make it so that you have almost no chance to escape the onslaught of other enemies, therefore essentially pinning and killing you.

With DT, if you try running away the moment they hit you, you just gave them an advantage in attacking again. If you just let them hit you, it'd take at least two monsters to pin you into the corner, and even then it's unlikely. So being pinned in the corner is more the player doing something wrong than it is the enemies being capable of doing so.

I have played both games for countless hours and beat both games. I have finished both of those games on one credit. I stand by my previous statement.

PS GnG arcade version is harder than the NES version.
