| Subject: Valis Smileys? Mon 20 Aug 2007, 2:22 am | |
| How about some Valis-style smileys? Don't make them full-size character sprites or anything. Maybe just the heads? You could use the characters' heads from the top of the screen in Valis III for Sega Genesis or something (the ones that indicate who is selected/available). | |

I tried so many times and so many ways to remove it, but it never worked out with me. I'm sure Spar knows how to do it. BTW, where is she? It's been really a long time since last time we talked to her.

| NICELY DONE, INDEED! can you show me the trick of how to remove these white spaces, please? *uploaded the modified Valis smilies to the forums* EDIT:I was going to check if photoshop Help provides some help of how to do the transparency, when unexpectedly, I found the option of exporting transparent image under the Help menu (why didn't they kept it in somewhere else where you can find it more easily, like under the File menu , stupid designers) anyway, thanks alot, kevinski, you don't have to teach me now *uploaded the modified other smilies to the forums* | |

| Subject: Transparency Thu 23 Aug 2007, 10:19 am | |
| While unnecessary, I'll explain how I did it. First off, in Photoshop, you'll need to make sure that you're not in Index color mode. That'll allow you to make the background layer (the only layer available when you open the file) a layer that can contain transparency. Switch it to RGB mode, then rename the background layer to make it a non-background layer, thus enabling it to contain transparency.
Once you've done that, simply select the Magic Wand tool and set its tolerance to 0. Setting the tolerance to 0 will prevent it from selecting any similar colors by accident. Then, with the Magic Wand tool selected, simply click once in each white area of the image and press Delete. Just re-save as a GIF and make sure that the Transparency box is checked in the save options dialog box.
I used Paint.NET. Unfortunately, the compression isn't all that great, but I don't have Photoshop installed at the moment. Paint.NET was actually much more efficient with these steps, interestingly enough, though. All that I had to do was select the Magic Wand tool without switching the color mode or renaming the background layer.
By the way, the Lena ones are nice, but I'd do something about those white pixels on the edges. I didn't even check them for transparency, but you can delete the individual white pixels to clean them up considerably.
