PostSubject: ダイアナ Demon Hunter: A Game tribute to Valis from Oniric Factor   Thu 06 Oct 2011, 2:07 am

Hello to all, my name is Jorge, I am an independent game developer and a Valis fan too!

I have developed a mini game using the MSX1 graphics restrictions (resolution, number and type of colors, max color per row...). It is not a Valis game, but it is heavily influenced by Valis, the Fantasm soldier beacuse it was a game that i played and finished dozens of times in my childhood.

I sincerely expect that you enjoy it.

PS: Sorry for my bad english, if you found any important mistake or bug during the game, please tell to me.

seems interesting Very Happy
Could be first "playable" Valis fan game happy eyes

Things I like:

- Music is so thrilling Very Happy
- the walk sprites are so cool Very Happy
- the monsters look evil Very Happy
- The text/story is short and interesting/thrilling

Things I find wierd:

- jumping upward is fast, while falling down is slow? kindof wierd!
- no powerups, new weapons, etc.

But I like the game, I'd be looking forward for another update of the game Very Happy

So far, I collected 2 gems only heh-heh

Thanks I am very glad to know you enjoyed the game!. Smile

I really don't know if i will create a new version, but if i create another, I promise that I will add some items like you mention. About the Jump... he he he... you are right I know that it is not very realistic, but to change the gravity variables should implies to change the platforms positions, change the boss timing rutine... it can be done, but I don't have much free time and i preffer to be realist with my projects.

Cheer up!, the game is really short and if you know where are the gems, it becomes easier. There is a total of 5 gems, so you have completed almost the half of the game.

Great work! Very Happy

I love the Valis 2-style hints every time you pick up a gem and the oldschool music!

The only complaint I have is that it would be nice if you could pause the game. You can’t look away from the screen at all or enemies just spawn in and tear you apart.

sequel > new version Wink

According to the Katakana on the title screen, her name is "Daiana". I guess you'd pronounce it as Diana in English.

It is in English. Every line of text in the game is given in both languages. Also, just press F4 for windowed mode.

The game actually has a save states function. Use F5 to save any time and F6 to load. Just like an emulator, basically.

Thanks for that, I completed the game! Was really fun Very Happy
Now I'm sad! Caused I liked the game, and the game ended so quickly Sad

Tweak changes to the game:

- Missing English text when Diana's power is low
- English text before the boss disappears fast
- Gravity: if you can't change the fall speed, change the jump speed and make it as fast as the fall speed

You know what I would enjoy very much? A hard-mode Very Happy
- 10 monsters-respawning at once!
- 20 Gems to collect (gem locations are random, but there's a hint where to find each)
- every 20 kills, player gains +1 HP
- the big demon can shoot while you try to run away from him
- no saving allowed in hard-mode evil

Hello to all.

I have been making some minor changes:

- Added pause mode [SPACE]
- Changed the gravity variables (you could notice that some of the platforms and buildings have changed a bit)
- Enemies are a little weaker
- Corrected the show time in boss message
- Added the english message for Diana's power low

Thanks for your interest!. I really don't know if i will make another version soon, but if you want, you can continue making some brainstorming. I am taking note of your ideas, so if i take some free time I will keep it in mind.

PS: The new version download link is the same.

That was fast! Shocked

Pausing is a great addition, and the jumping feels more natural. The boss fight is certainly more difficult now (less exploitable); I had to change my strategy for it.

Speaking of the boss fight, I noticed a pretty serious bug there:

Of course you can. Sorry for the long delay.

I have created a new version, this one can be played on web browsers. Some things have been changed a bit.

http://www.oniric-factor.com/demon-hunter

I am seriously thinking about a new version with remastered graphics and some changes like items, compass, and enhanced gameplay. Would you like to see something like this? i am mind opened to any idea. The result should be another short game.

I wish a happy 2012 to all!

Good, then i'll just play the demo in the meantime. Demon Hunter looks like in a improvement with the music, however the part where your in the sewers you fall through the pipes when you take a hit. Nice improvement of the difficulty.

Sounds good to me! Smile Of course, you're the one doing all the work so you have to evaluate whether it's worth it for you. I'm going to try the online version again later with XPadder... I can't play with a keyboard fear

EDIT: Okay, I finished the game. Some bugs and other observations:

- When falling off a platform, you can jump in mid-air.
- You fall through some pipes when struck
- You can still manipulate the title screen as it fades away
- Diana gets back up on her feet and can be controlled for a split second during the Game Over screen
- Some enemies can spawn almost right on top of you (especially at the second crystal and against walls)
- When your health goes down to 2, there seems to be a jingle or song that plays, but it's drowned out by the level music and you can barely hear it at all.
- Destroying an enemy projectile (bullet) causes two explosions instead of one, and therefore makes a louder sound. I don't know if it's intentional or not.

IMO enemies spawn too close to you in general, but this is probably intentional. It's pretty annoying to get hit by a bat that spawned in front of you at the same time you decided to take a jump.

EDIT AGAIN: Two more bug reports after finishing the game two more times.

- When you finish the game you can press X to be returned to the title screen. If you opt to play the game again, the hint messages are gone. At first I thought this was an easter egg, but I think it's a bug because I searched the entire stage and couldn't find any gems... I don't think they even spawn. In addition, Diana's health carries over from the first playthrough.

- If you scale the buildings right at the beginning of the stage, you'll discover a second "ghost" instance of the HUD floating around in the air above the roof of the very first building! I'm not sure if this only happens on the second playthrough, though. Shocked

Hello to all.

I finally decided to develop a Demon Hunter remake and it is almost finished.

I am looking for private betatesters to test the game before to launch it.

If any of you are interested, tell me here, please.

I would be interested in doing that. I'm very busy right now so it would depend on the length of the game and how quickly you need the results of the test, but I'll do what I can.

I sent you a PM with some minor observations. I can't judge the difficulty well because I'm used to the mechanics and it's become easy for me. Because of that, I encourage other people to test it.
