Subject: The Dragonball Live Action Movie (Some Thoughts) Tue 12 Feb 2008, 3:04 am
From what I've read about it, it's shaping up to be less like the series that all of us here love(d), yet, for the life of me, I want to see this. I know it will be a turd. It will be awful, if not god awful.
They're all going to be in high school. Yes, high school. Like, it's Smallville. Apparently, the producers of this film felt that to have a successful live action film based on the beloved Dragonball series, they had to completely alter the plot. Forget the fact that it's been around almost as long as me, that it's been translated and shown in virtually every country (I've seen episodes in 4 languages), or the countless games, toys, products that still come out.
And, hell, you can even forget it's impact and influence on half of the stuff that's come out after it. But, yeah, people here wouldn't know what it is, and that's why Goku going to be in high school and the dude who played Spike on Buffy: The Vampire Slayer is going to be Piccolo.
It blows my mind.
Here are other things that blow my mind about this:
- No Krillin. Instead it's some character with a name I care not to remember. - No animal people, which means no Oolong or Puar. - I've seen a pic of "Goku" walking with a book bag with a Yellowish/Orange car behind him. His "cloud" might be that car. - Speaking of Goku, people are making a big stink about how the actor playing him is Caucasian. Honestly, that's the least thing to be worried about, lol. - Chow Yun Fat is playing Mutenroshi.
There's more...but it's 2 in the morning.
Hopefully, some of this info could be outdated. You guys might probably know more about this than me.
Your thoughts.

I also heard about this rumor before... But I never expected this will become true... Dragon Ball is a very good manga... but making it a movie? which part will be taken as plot? Smallville??
this sounds like a nightmare...

I want see it, but, spend no money to do so. But, then again, I want to spend money to fuel a full bodied rant afterwards. There in lies my dilemma, and probably all of your dilemmas as well.
Egh.
Maybe, I should get someone I know to get it via torrent. Hopefully, there'll be an inside guy who loves DB and leaks it out as a means of protest. Wouldn't that be grand? I think it would, because no one should spend a dime to see this. No one!

yes... I probably will be going to the cinema to watch it... but I know since now, it won't be good at all... so why waste money on it? why making the producers believe they did a good job because people is watching the movie?

I guess you're right... people who knows this anime serie, are the ones who will be watching it... tough they know in advance this movie won't be good at all... I don't think ordinary people will make lines to see this movie.... it'll be fans only....

You know, Hollywood must think that no one knows about DB. Honestly, before I saw the show itself (back in 1996/97), I was exposed to it mainly because of fan drawings in the Art gallery of mostly every video game magazine. And, forget when it was shown in the states. We were like, what, the last place that it was shown in. It blew the hell up a few years ago, so, with that reason, for the life of me, I can't understand why it completely diverted from the original plot.
But, I really couldn't tell you why they decided to do this instead of a direct adaptation. I mean, look at movies like Sin City. That's literally, a direct adaptation of the graphic novels. Same with 300, more or less. Those movies did pretty good in the box offices, and yeah, they were good films. Their plots, characters, or the overall appeal didn't need to be changed. The directors felt like the original source material was well enough to speak for itself.
Hell, that's probably it: The Director. He's probably a Hollywood tool, like Brett Bratner (He does the Rush Hour movies and did that horrible X-Men 3 movie; sp?), a guy who makes shitty movies just to make money. No artistic integrity. No soul. Nothing. With that guy, he basically says "Hey, I can make that into a movie. Give me money for it. Watch, it'll be good. It'll make a lot of money."
I guess I should be thankful that he's not doing it. It probably would have sucked even more than it looks like it's going to suck already.
I would have settled for a CGI DB movie, eventhough that kinda made me cringe as I typed it.

Yeah! they care only for money!
they don't care in making people to feel being part of the movie! they don't realize they have to make public get interested and live the movie through the images! they just read the script, accept the payment, and say actors what to do...
but you know, maybe this also has to do with writters... they made a bad adaptation... they didn't even investigate what's all DB about! they just accepted to make the script ... and of course... they accepted the money...
and I just heard they were on strike...

this is true.... having a bad adaptation, is already a bad news... imagine having that guy as this movie Director...

I have nothing against CGI. I loved the Final Fantasy movies (yes, even Spirits Within), and I love anything that Pixar puts out, but, yeah, for DB, it would just be awkward. I dunno.

Spirits Within... a lot to say about it... but that's for Games to Movies section..
as for DB... I don't know neither... I have recently saw Beowulf, in 3D... and it was Amazing.... my life changed that day...
In DB case.. as you mention, the main trouble is the adaptation...
I hated many chapters of DB because they were only saying and doing the same thing very often... so, I think the story can be shortenend a bit somehow...
but if they just pick up a little part of the story... without the background... and that means all the plot... that's not DB anymore...

The movie should be just a blonde guy in a Orange and Blue karate gi, screaming while charging. It should be just 2 hours of that. Nothing else. Plus, that would pretty much the series in a nutshell (No sequel needed).

I agree... the best of DB is FIGHT !!!
but I'm sure they will add some backgound... a lot of flashbacks.. and the search for Dragon Balls... so the fight will last very few minutes... with a lot of that "I'm lying on the ground while everything seems lost" part...
and I assure you something worse.... there will be a sequel...

yes... why would they do so?
anyway, nowadays people don't go to cinema... you buy a bootleg movie, and that's it...
why do they still make more and more sequels of a movie nobody liked... ?

Money...or they're sadists.
And, off subject, here in the US, they make rip-off movies.
One of the funnier ones I've seen is called Transmorphers, which came out around the time that Transformers came out. Everytime I see the cover, I laugh, because I can't believe it was done.
I could only imagine what we'll see when Dragonball comes out.

They could do what they did with the NES "Dragonball" game that was released in the US. It was under the name Dragon Power. Basically, sprites got flipped around or altered. One example of this is Mutenroshi asking for a pair of panties (they appear in a little thought bubble over his head). Of course, they couldn't get away with that so they flipped the panties in the thought bubble to make it look like a hamburger (an all white hamburger or a Ghostburger as I've come to call it) and changed it to him wanting that instead of panties. That's the only one I can remember off hand.
But, yeah, watch them call it DRAGON POWER, lol.
Oh, and watch this:
