Dragonball: Evolution isn't the only monstrosity that Hollywood is sicking on us. There are more. Here are a few of the ones I know about:
Neon Genesis Evangelion - All I know about this one is that it's been in the works for a while. I first heard about production or talks about production or whatever around 2004. WETA, the company behind the Lord Of The Rings movies is supposedly doing the CGI and whatnot. There's some production and concept art out there. It looks promising but....
AKIRA - Leonardo DiCaprio's production company paid six figures to acquire the rights to do an American adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo's AKIRA. He might also play Kaneda. And the movie will take place in a futuristic Manhattan (New York City) as opposed to Neo-Tokyo.
Macross/Robotech - Tobey MacGuire's production company wants to get the rights to do this. That's all I heard.
Astroboy - Originally, I heard that the guy who created/directed Dexter's Lab/Samurai Jack (Genndy Tartakovsky) was going to direct this. It was also going to be half live action, half CGI. Eventually, they changed directors (I was looking forward to see how Tartakovsky would have handled the movie; it would have been his first directing gig). I don't know who's directing it now (and I'm too lazy to look), but the trailer is out and it looks promising. Really promising. I'm really (x1,000) looking forward to this. Check it out.
Gatchaman - It's going to be a CGI film. There is an :11 second trailer out. It's a teaser that shows what the world is going to look like in the film. I'm even more excited about this than Astroboy (and I'm REALLY excited about Astroboy).
Ghost In The Shell - Spielberg is a fan of the series (or the concept; I forget which) and supposedly wants to do a live action film. I'm not really a fan of Spielberg or GiTS, so egh.
That's all I know about the US films. From Japan, they've made a Yatterman movie. It's being directed by Miike Takashi. The trailer kicked ass. I've never heard about Yatterman until I saw the trailer (and read about Tatsunoko Pro Vs. Capcom; he's in it), but I like Takashi's work.
Speaking of Japanese cinema, even they make some pretty bad adaptations (Hell, most Japanese cinema is hit or miss). Like, I bought Devilman at a con 2 years ago...and I've only seen that movie once. Man, that was bad. That was a miss. There's a Silver lining though: Cashern and Dororo. Those were pretty badass. Hakaider was also pretty cool, too. I mean, seriously, it's impossible to mess up a movie where it's just 2 hours of a robot with a shotgun and motorcycle KILLING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.
That's all I have.
Discuss. Or not.

Whoa!!! I wasn't aware of so many movies coming from anime!!! I also heard about Evangelion Movie, but I thought it was gonna be an anime Movie, I mean, a remake... so, are they planing to make a Live action movie??? well... maybe if they use lot of special effects that could help... the storyline is pretty complicated for a movie... so far, I still don't understand Evangelion...
I'm intrigued about Astroboy... I also saw recently a new anime version... I think this one has more probabilities to succed...

After I saw the G.I. Joe commercial, I just lost all hope in live action cartoon-movies. It looked awesome, then I saw it was G.I. Joe, then I just lost all hope for mankind...

it's true... there are also american cartoons that become movies... I saw that trailer too... it looked amazing... I don't know if it'll be good or bad since I don't know too much about the serie... But what about Transformers??? I loved the movie... althought the truth is, it has nothing to do with the cartoon either...

Yeah, it looks really corny. I've dubbed it the G.I. Joe Sigma-6 movie.

They gonna make an Avatar: The Last Airbender movie. I'm kinda worried about it.

Transformers was actually quite good. But that was, mainly, because it was mostly animated. If they'd actually turned those autobots into decepticons into people in costumes with their faces showing, I could guarantee you it would've been very, VERY bad.

I knew about the Evangelion one. I know ADV Films and WETA are (were?) supposed involved with that one. Unfortunately, the last bit of info I got regards to it was they were shopping around for directors (they are saying a few "A" list ones have reported to express an interest in doing it). Otherwise, there hasn't been much info lately. Also, ADV seems to be in dire straights (if they selling several of their acquisitions and some of their existing licences to Funimation is any indication) and WETA has shelved the project in favor of doing Halo or something...it just kind of makes me wonder if this project is ever going to get off the ground at all. However, I do know there's a good fake trailer on YouTube on what a live-action Evangelion movie might look like (although...Elijah Wood as Shinji? I don't think so. He's too old).
I've also heard rumors about a Battle Angel live action movie being in the works, and that James "I'm the King of the World" Cameron was said to produce and/or direct it.
Also long ago there was supposed to be a Sailor Moon live action movie, and Geena Davis was going to be Queen Beryl, but that never really got off the ground/was only a rumor. (Of course, if you really want to see a live-action Sailor Moon, watch the Japanese "Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon" series...OR if you really want to desperately want to see what an American live-action version could have been like...watch the Saban trailer. )
Now...on the subject of anime-to-live action Japanese cinema, I thought the first and second Death Note movies were really good. Sure, the plotline was shortened to fit within the constraints of the media, but the people certainly did a good job making things sensical. The actors who played Light and L did a good job getting the characters attitudes and mannerisms down. I thought the CG'd Ryuk was also good, although I (at first) thought he kind of looked ridiculous in the photos, but certainly looked better when in motion. Another good Japanese anime live-action movie is Battle Royale. I admit, I haven't read the manga or the novel that the manga is based upon, but it is still really good.
Anyway, I'm done rating for now. Thanks for reading...and good day (or night...whenever you're reading this.)

Holy crap, I forgot about the Battle Angel Alita movie!
And yeah, I remember reading about the American Live Action Sailor Moon movie. If my memory serves me right, wasn't Buena Vista (Disney) gonna play a part in that? And I could have sworn that I heard that they wanted Melissa Joan Hart (Clarissa Explains It All, Sabrina: The Teenage Witch) to play Serena/Usagi?
I really liked the Death Note movies myself, I don't know why I forgot to mention those. Have you seen the 3rd film? It's about L's final days.
And as for Battle Royale, I used to love the movie...until I read the novel. It kicks ass. A lot of ass. Give it a read. It's a real page turner. Seriously.
The manga is loosely based on the novel. It's okay.

I think I've heard she was one of the people said in the running for Serena/Bunny/Usagi. I think I also heard they were considering Alicia Silverstone (of Clueless fame) for the role too, but I'm not too sure about that.

Not yet. They were playing it at a theater close by to me last month. Sadly, the theater they were showing only showing it for two days (one show per a day). and the times they were showing it at was when I was still at work.
Oh well...there's always DVD.

It's called Change The WorLD...or something like that.
There should be one online...
Oh, there's a Japanese Lupin III movie. It's kinda old. Has anyone seen it?
And, I can't believe I forgot about this...Silent_Protagonist, I'm sorry...but, yeah did anyone see the Live Action Fist Of The North Star movie? It came out a while back. Mere words can't describe how terrible it is or how friggin' awkward it is. It starred the guy who played Ken (Gary Daniels? I think that's his name) in that really awesome Street Fighter sequence from the City Hunter movie, which did have an anime (Ha ha), and therefore belongs in this discussion!
Here's the scene:
WIN.

I haven't seen those movies...
but I saw that City Hunter scene ... possibly, it was better than the one starring by Van Damme... I think the guy who plays Guile is the funniest...

Live action tentacles, lol. Oh god.
And, you know what I remembered the other day? The live action Guyver movies...starring David Hayter...the voice of SOLID SNAKE. I used to love the first one (I was a kid then). The second one felt way too long and only had 15 minutes of Guyver fighting.
I actually saw these before I started renting the anime series. I remember going "Why is Guyver so tall in the anime?"
Memories.

Here are some more Japanese ones:
20th Century Boys - I don't know anything about this series. Nothing story wise, really. I mean, I do know it's a manga (not sure about the anime series yet)...but yeah. I'm bringing this one up because it was playing most of last week at the 2009 New York Asian Film Festival.
Sakigake!! Otokojuku (Be A Man! Samurai School) - Another film they were showing at the NYAFF this year; It's based on a manga series about a school where, you guessed it, boys become men...and samurai. The only reason I know about this series is because of the Jump Ultimate Stars game (which is awesome!) for the DS. The movie itself was action-packed and very funny. It stars Tak Sakaguchi of VERSUS fame.
Oh, and Sakaguchi is also in the live action CROMARTIE HIGH SCHOOL movie as well.
I also got to see the live action CUTIE HONEY movie last week. It's basically the Gainax Re:Cutie Honey OVAs...just live action. Another funny thing about this is that the movie was co-written and directed by Hideaki Anno (Evangelion series).
There are probably more. My brain sucks.

Started watching it. I watched the part where Shin was supposed to disable Ken. There was no Hokuto Shinken. There was no Nanto Koshu Ken (Shin's Nanto Seiken Style). There was just a pathetic-looking slapfight that disgusted me so much, I may shudder upon finding it while searching on youtube from now on.

My Grandmother liked it; that's the universal sign that it's no good.
There's also a Korean version. The intro was Korean guys doing katas and stuff. Definite LOLs are to be had.

I don't think it is yet...but Astro Boy comes out in like, 3 months!
Some more additions to the list:
Oldboy - A Korean film; it's based on the short Manga series. It's probably one of my favorite movies, ever. The film is part of trilogy of revenge films. I highly recommend this movie. It's a little graphic at times, but, wow, it's amazing. I'm trying to figure out why it took so long to talk about this one.
Great Teacher Onizuka - I don't know anything about the series. I have a friend who saw it. He said it was bland as hell.
GeGeNoGe Kitaro (sp?) - I have always seen or heard of this anime, but never actually sat down and watched it. It's supposed to be pretty good. The live action looks decent.
Detroit Metal City - The live action film is a dead on adaptation of the Anime series. It's also funny as Hell.
I made a list in my head of all these movies...but, like always, I forgot most of them.

Well a live version of Ghost in the Shell might be good depending if they have the right actors and a good scrip. Also Gundam or Robotech could be a good live action flick. I think I heard of a Cowboy Bebop live movie from someone at Best Buy. The guy who played Neo is suppost to play Spike.

Tobey Macguire's production company supposedly bought (or is in the process to buy) the rights to do a Robotech movie; I haven't heard much more than that.
Keanu Reeves is a terrible actor, IMO. He'd probably have the action stuff down, but Spike has a personality and character...so, Keanu shouldn't come within 100 ft of that.
Oh, and with the Akira movie, I heard a few things: - It's going to be a trilogy. - The Hughes Brothers (Dead Presidents, Book of Eli) may direct it.
