An introduction -RyIII- is approaching fast!

As for our main topic, I came into Valis relatively late, about the same time that decent Genesis emulators started to show up (it used to be that it was a big deal when one of them emulated sound). this was largely because I remember EGM's big print ads and coverage whenever a new one was coming out. I ended up enjoying the mainline series, for all of its translation difficulties, mostly because of the gameplay, but also because it was as surprisingly grim for a magical girl story as Phantasy Star 2 was surprisingly grim for an RPG at the time.

Then I found out about the original MSX2 Valis II, which almost looks like someone dropped a Fist of the North Star plot into a magical girl show.

As for other games, I love shmups, as the topic title can attest to, and really anything space-combat related in general, both video and tabletop games. The current ones I'm wading through are Siter Skain's ALLTYNEX trilogy (ALLTYNEX 2nd, RefleX, and Kamui), because they can do no wrong in gameplay design, as well as NCS's Gley Lancer, because it has a couple of neat gameplay innovations and Lucia is adorable. Phantasy Star 4 and Earthbound get regular replays as well. Also, because I'm crazy, I do the occasional run of La-Mulana

Welcome! I got started on the Genesis version of Valis too.

Now, once again I feel the need to broadcast my ignorance.... *ahem* I've never heard of La-Mulana before. But it looks interesting! I'll check it out.

For all of your download and translation patch needs. It's freeware, so no worries.

I do have to warn you, though- as it's a callback to MSX games like Maze of Galious and the like, it can be rather fiendishly difficult, especially puzzle-wise. You'll also want to read the manual once you've translated it. It's literally impossible to finish the game if you don't thoroughly read the manual.

As for the difficulty, well, I guess I'll just cry and fling my controller around the room... ...since I've been dumbed down so much over the years by easy games. Nowadays you practically finish a game the day you buy it, and games that I could finish years ago seem impossible to me now.
